Family holidays in Sanxenxo: a guide with kids (beaches, activities and accommodation)

Sanxenxo is one of Galicia's favourite destinations for travelling with children: fine sandy beaches with calm waters, flat seaside promenades, boat trips to the islands and a mild climate that makes summer pleasant without stifling heat. In this guide we tell you what to do in Sanxenxo with kids, which beaches to choose and how to plan your family holiday in Sanxenxo so that everyone has a great time.

The best beaches in Sanxenxo for children

Silgar Beach

It is Sanxenxo's best-known beach: around 750 metres of white sand, generally calm waters and a Blue Flag. It has showers, toilets and sunshade and sun lounger rental, and it sits right next to the town centre and the marina, so ice-cream parlours, restaurants and everything you need are just a few steps away. In July and August it gets busy, so it is best to go early in the morning or late in the afternoon.

Baltar Beach

Quieter than Silgar and also awarded a Blue Flag. It has a wooden boardwalk with showers, fountains and toilets, beach bars and parking nearby. It is the beach right in front of Sanxenxo Deluxe, perfect for heading down with the little ones without taking the car.

A flat seaside walk linking both beaches: ideal with a pushchair, by bike or on a scooter, and for the classic ice cream at sunset.

What to do in Sanxenxo with kids

  • Boat trip to the Isle of Ons. Boats leave from Sanxenxo and Portonovo in season (roughly from spring to autumn) for the Isle of Ons, part of the Atlantic Islands National Park. Children love the crossing and the crystal-clear beaches. Access is regulated in the busiest months, so book in advance with the ferry company, which will tell you the timetables and whether an authorisation is needed.
  • Catamaran trips around the estuary. Several companies run trips around the Pontevedra and Arousa estuaries, some with a mussel tasting on board.
  • O Grove Aquarium. A short drive away, with marine species from the Rías Baixas. A perfect plan for a cloudy day.
  • A Lanzada Beach. A huge sandy beach between Sanxenxo and O Grove for a full day out, with plenty of space to play.
  • Pontevedra. Its old town is pedestrianised and easy to explore with children, with museums, squares and terraces.

Ideas for a rainy day

If you wake up to a grey day, don't worry: the O Grove Aquarium, Pontevedra's old town, local museums or a trip to Vigo are all good alternatives. And there's always the pool, a good film on the apartment's Smart TV and a family board game.

Tips for your family holiday in Sanxenxo

  • Book early if you are coming in July or August: it is high season and the best options sell out first.
  • June and September are ideal months for families with young children: good weather, quieter beaches and better prices.
  • Choose accommodation with a kitchen: breakfasts, dinners and baby bottles at your own pace, without depending on restaurant opening hours.
  • Always bring a jumper: evenings in Galicia can get cool, even in summer.
